Every summer for the past 26 years, KGSR has hosted the summertime event, Blues on the Green. It is a free concert series in Zilker Park that is family-friendly and a tradition of Austinites to partake in every summer. Whether you’re in town visiting, or an Austin local, Blues on the Green is a great way to kickstart your summer. Of course there are blues performers, but it doesn’t stop there. This free concert event also showcases country, Latin, rock, and other various genres of music. Whether you frequent this event every year or arejust now hearing about it, Blues on the Green is a fun and free music event to attend this summer in Austin, TX.
The Anne W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge houses the largest municipal bat community in the world. These bats migrate each spring to Austin, TX from central Mexico and return back to their Mexican residences in the Fall. Visitors can partake in a bat-watching cruise and sunset tour between the months of March and November to view the bat migration and enjoy a beautiful Austin sunset. It is an amazing sight to see these bats emerge from the bridge, and there are about 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats that reside under this bridge. This is a great event for anyone to attend and the perfect way to enjoy an Austin summer sunset!
Barton Springs is a natural pool located in Austin, TX that measures to about 3 acres in size. It is available for year-round swimming, but Barton Springs is especially great to enjoy in the summertime. Austinites and visitors can relax here all summer long here to swim, relax, and keep cool from the Texas heat. Barton Springs ia a man-made reservoir fed by natural springs consistently keeping the water temperature at about 68 degress. Keep in mind the pool is closed on Thursdays to allow for cleaning and maintenance of the pool area for wildlife and visitors.
Every Thursday night between the months of April through September, Austin offers a free live music series called Unplugged at the Grove. All ages are welcome and visitors can enjoy local Austin musicians, food, and various drink specials. This summer some of the musical performances include, Bob Schneider, Darden Smith, Rhett Miller, Charley Crockett, and many more! This event has been going on for about 25 years and has not lost any momentum. Go enjoy this free event every Thursday night this summer with family and friends!
Zilker Theatre Productions is a non-profit organization that provides free plays in the summertime at the Zilker Hillside Theatre. These plays bring in about 45,000 people annually and provide award-winning entertainment for locals and out of town visitors each summer. ZTP produces one of the longest outdoor musicals in the country, and this has been going on for almost 60 years! If you are into live performances and musicals, definitely check out a few this summer on the Zilker Hillside Theatre.
